Bachelor Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies
The Bachelor of Arts major in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Basel is an area study in history and social science that deals with historical and socio-political issues of the Middle Eastern region as well as with religious and cultural issues of Islam and Muslim peoples in modern and contemporary history.
The BA major in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Basel is similar to “Islamwissenschaft” in other German-speaking universities: In addition to the instruction of Arabic (as the central language of the Islamic religion and culture and the largest language of the Middle East) and Turkish (as the second largest language of the Middle East), students receive an introduction into the religious, historical and cultural aspects of Islam and the Middle Eastern region. Although most central topics of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies is represented in Basel, the BA program in Basel has a special focus in teaching and research that distinguish it from similar programs in “Islamwissenschaft” in Switzerland and German-speaking countries. Thus the Bachelor study goes beyond religious, theological and anthropological studies of Islam and Muslim cultures (Islamic Studies) and includes also non-religious themes of history, society, and politics of the Middle Eastern region (Middle Eastern Studies).
The six semester lasting BA program is a double-major program covering in total 180 credits, divided into two majors (each 75 credits) and a complementary area (30 credits). Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies is a BA major at the Department of Social Science of the Faculty of Humanities and needs to be combined with another BA major. Language of instruction is German and English.
