"Homo Oeconomicus of 'New Turkey'?: Urban Development and Architecture in Contemporary Istanbul
In this talk Esra Akcan unpacks the transformation in the urban fabric, including the construction of new housing estates and conversion of the existing informal settlements; as well as the construction of urban icons and mega-projects, by exposing the government's legal and economic policies that enabled their commitment to public sphere, and neo-Ottoman symbolism.
Prof. Dr. Esra Akcan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and Director of the Cornell Institute for European Studies.
